It feels like a broken record to say that season four of New Amsterdam is knocking it out of the park but again, we were given a fantastic episode. After two seasons we are finally given a remembrance to Georgia and how her death impacted Max. Along with Fuentes on her continued goal to take down everyone and everything that Max impacted at New Amsterdam. Let’s get into this review!
Max’s Memory and present-day feelings
One of the main plot points of this episode involves an ambulance crash that is witnessed by Helen and Max. Naturally this triggers him and causes the terrible memory of his wife’s death to flash before his eyes as he attempts to help those who are injured. Beyond the initial shock of the similarities to his wife’s death, Max is bonusly (not a word but it fits the feeling) enraged when he notices that the information sheet was torn off and he can’t figure out how this accident happened. As the episode progresses and he hounds everyone in the ER, he can find out the cause of the issue. More on that though in Fuentes section!
Naturally, all the problems that arose in this episode created a question in his mind relating to Helen and Luna. With Georgia gone and having been gone since Luna’s birth, Max is realizing that he must face the question of what Luna will call Helen seeing as though she is now the mother role in her life. They all end up deciding to choose the word ‘Mum’ to describe Helen since that is what they call moms in England. Cue all the Sharpwin fans screaming and crying. Rest in peace Georgia.
Helen’s bad call
Helen is faced with what I would assure are consequences faced by department chairs in real life, budgeting their departments during a pandemic. During an overview with a patient, it’s revealed that the stroke that Alijah had would have been preventable if proper testing and medication was administrated. Helen realizes that the Doppler department that was priory in charge of this testing had been disbanded due to budgeting and that she was the one who made the decision. At realizing this she goes to Fuentes and begs her to reopen this department and that she can’t imagine seeing children suffer due to a quick decision made during a panicking inducing time. In the end Fuentes agrees which surprises Helen since the other woman isn’t known to be so giving. Her surprise turns into anger when she realizes that to get the screening department back, Fuentes shut down the wig department for the cancer patients.
Floyd’s tragic relationship
I don’t even know what to say about this relationship anymore. I think most viewers had a clear inkling as to what they thought the end would be and chances are; you were right. The fact summary is that Floyd, Lyn and her husband attempt to have a civil conversation about their relationship and the potential of it harming their work environment. From the beginning of the conversation, it’s clear that none of them know how to handle a romantic polyamorous relationship. It’s briefly mentioned that Lyn, in the past, only conducted relations outside of the hospital and that having her new love interest be a fellow doctor complicated the situation.
As the episode goes on and the two men must interact with patients together, it’s clear that they both are struggle with their pride. They attempt to undermine one another and question their ability to correctly call the best way to handle their surgeries. By the time they get over their pettiness, it’s clear that their current situation isn’t working. We end the episode with Floyd, Lyn and her husband agreeing that they are in over their heads.
Personally, as one viewer of the show, the only one that I felt sorry for was Lyn’s husband (still don’t know his name sorry guy).
He clearly loves her and was grasping as straws trying to figure out how to keep their marriage afloat. Unfortunately for him, it’s clear that she finds happiness by having more than one partner. There is no way to know how this whole thing will work out for them or if they all will just agree to go their separate ways. What’s are your takes fellow viewers? Do you think they have the potential to stay all together or are their personalities too varying to mesh well?
Lauren’s bad at communication
Her plot this episode was small. She gave into Fuentes’ threat and gave another donation to the hospital to keep her secret bribe from Leyla. Much like with the relationship between Floyd and Lyn, I feel like most viewers can predict the result of this mess. Leyla finding out might be the end of one of the best couples in the shows history which would be disappointing. We shall see though, here’s hoping Leyla already knows and ends up not caring!
Fuentes has it out for the main five
Much like with me saying that I love this season, I also have gotten into the habit of proclaiming how much New Amsterdam needed a villain like Fuentes. Every review consists of a list of people that she just completely owns and tears down to fit her agenda and this review is no different so hear we go;
· Iggy - she is first to confront Iggy about his choice to no longer practice psychology. Obviously, this isn’t good for budgeting considering that they seem to be paying him the same amount for less work. He points out that he oversees the residents and sees over their responsibilities of handling all the patients that he would see before resigning. Logically it’s easy to agree with her but she presents it in such a demeaning and unlikable way that makes you want to see Iggy’s side despite it being the worse of the two options.
· Floyd – to add onto the problems that Floyd is having with Lyn’s husband Fuentes brings up the problem that both him and Floyd are considered department chairs and commonly share patients. Not wanting to keep them both at the top, she suggests that the two of them work out a plan to only have one head. Naturally, according to Fuentes, Lyn’s husband already gave input on this problem much to Floyd’s annoyance. Before walking off Fuentes claims that she’s sure they can all ‘cut the suit to fit.’ Once again, her presentation isn’t the best, but she makes sense.
· Lauren – after “going over the financials” Fuentes notices Lauren’s donation that she made to the Dean Discretionary Fund (aka the bribe for Layla) which causes her to panic. Being the blackmail queen that she is Fuentes says that she can keep her donation private (aka away from Leyla) if Lauren agrees to make another donation to the hospital’s endowment. Out of the four arguments Fuentes has with the main characters, this one is probably the only shady one. Her decision to go through with the request shows a clear lack of morals when it comes to assuring that the hospital gets out of debt. Truly she is the opposite of Max.
· Max – she and Max disagree (shocking I know) on how to handle the ambulance issues at the hospital. One of the biggest, and the motivation behind the staff picking up someone out of their district, is that most ambulances are sourced from private companies. Not being able to afford funding for their own ambulances is a massive problem in Fuentes’ eyes and she tells Max that increased speed makes up for the extra mileage that she is telling the drivers to make. Rather than being concerned with the safety of the patients and the drivers of the ambulances, she is prioritizing the ability to pick up as many people as possible and bring to the hospital. The decision isn’t fantastic and is a stark reminder of her obsession with the financials over the clients and employees.
Final Thoughts
Yet another solid episode that does a good job at setting up the big battle between Max and Fuentes. There is also the major concern over whether Max and Helen will follow through with their move to London. What do you think? Will they make the move? Will Fuentes win the game? Let us know your thoughts!
